Cherkasy Region wayfinding systems

Cherkasy region is a place of power

Cherkasy region is a place where everything is full of history, incredible strength, and energy. Key places for Ukrainian history are concentrated on the territory of the region: the birthplace of Taras Shevchenko, Chyhyrynshchyna, Kholodny Yar, the world's largest settlement of Trypillia culture near the village of Legedzino. One of the seven wonders of Ukraine is the Sofiyivka park in Uman. Here is the largest Buddhist temple in Europe "White Lotus", one of the oldest oaks in Europe, the Dnipro slopes, ancient canyons, and unique sights. As well as many picturesque places where you can relax and admire beautiful nature.

Helping people to discover this place

A good team of specialists works in the region, whose main task is to tell the whole world about this location. In 2021, a new wayfinding system was developed and installed, which consists of more than 30 iron totems, 5 wooden totems, 50 tablets and steles, and several large totems.

Navigation is installed throughout the region, in all major tourist attractions, and helps tourists to navigate the place and find the best food, accommodation, and entertainment spots.

Maps and design

For the project, we developed several different maps for different types of wayfinding. The main difficulty of the project was that wayfinding elements are installed in small towns or even places where there are few tourist spots within a kilometer radius, but these locations are within a radius of 10 - 15 kilometers from each other. Therefore, there are two maps on the totem at once. Large map - a large crop of the next 15 - 30 kilometers. Small map - a small crop, that shows what is within walking distance of a person that is next to a tourist site.

The main colors, fonts, and icons were taken from the previously developed brand book for the Cherkasy region, authored by olkwhite and bulanovburo, you can look through the case at the link. For our part, we tried not to break anything, but on the contrary, to complement the excellent branding by developing it into navigation elements.

Concept and materials

The concept is based on our standard totems from the urban and park wayfinding series. The main elements of which are: iron (used for frames), oak (used as the main material for park elements), and aluminum composite (used as the main finishing material).

The project was divided into two parts. In the first part of the project in the totems, the lower element was concrete. During the second part of the project the lower elements were replaced with a composite material stylized as concrete, which was dictated by the project deadlines but did not affect the visual and functional load.

Installation and implementation

The main difficulties in this project were logistical features, timing, and installation time. We developed a special plan according to which the installation of about 100 elements took place in 21 days, and the installation area was the most complex. All elements were located on an area of 20,000 square kilometers, in 20 different cities and villages on the left and right banks of the Dnipro.

The installation period of October - December also added complexity, as can be seen in the photographs, the sun was still shining somewhere, but somewhere it was already snowing. In total, the installation team was 25 people who were divided into groups who worked throughout the region.

Reviews and everyday use

The first presentation of the project took place at the tourist forum, which was held near the town of Chigirin in the village of Subotov, next to the “Illyrian Church”, which is considered the burial place of the Ukrainian Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitsky. At this event, there was a public discussion of the project, and for the first time, the creation of a large-scale project throughout the region was announced.

After the installation, we received 1000's QR code scans and audio guide listens, lots of Instagram photos, and positive feedback from local tourist information centers. The project was finalized on the 10th of December 2021.

P.S. 🇺🇦

We are a Ukrainian company based in Ukraine. We have a large team from different cities in Ukraine. We were shocked on February 24, 2022, and our main task was to survive and relocate. When the first days passed, we began to volunteer to help citizens of Kharkiv to get humanitarian aid. We are doing everything we can for Ukraine to win this senseless war. We hope that one day we will be able to continue full-fledged work in Ukraine, and for now, we are trying to refocus on the external market and load the studio with work.
